Spooky Mummy Jalapeno Poppers Halloween Snack

Spooky Mummy Jalapeno Poppers Halloween Snack

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 large fresh jalapenos
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tube (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 20–40 candy eyeballs (found in the baking aisle)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Preparation of Peppers and Filling. Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C) and lining a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice each jalapeno in half lengthwise. Use a small spoon to scrape out all the seeds and white membranes. If you prefer a hotter snack, leave a few seeds behind. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir until the mixture is smooth and well-integrated.
  2. Step 2: Filling the Jalapenos. Use a spoon or a small spatula to fill each jalapeno half with the cheese mixture. Press the filling down firmly so it is flush with the edges of the pepper. Do not overfill the peppers, as the cheese will expand slightly as it melts and might spill out during the baking process.
  3. Step 3: Wrapping the Mummies. Unroll the crescent dough and press the perforations together to create a single flat sheet. Use a pizza cutter or a sharp knife to cut the dough into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide. Take one strip of dough and wrap it around a stuffed jalapeno half. Leave a small gap near the top for the “eyes” to peek through later. Wrap the dough haphazardly to mimic the look of messy mummy bandages.
  4. Step 4: Baking. Place the wrapped mummies on the prepared baking sheet. Whisk the egg with a teaspoon of water and lightly brush the dough strips with the egg wash to ensure a golden-brown finish. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the dough is puffed and golden and the peppers have softened slightly. Remove from the oven and let them cool for about 5 minutes.
  5. Step 5: Decorating and Plating. Once the poppers are slightly cooled but still warm, press two candy eyeballs into the cheese filling in the gap you left between the dough strips. The residual heat from the cheese will help the eyes stick. Arrange the mummies on a serving platter and serve immediately while the cheese is still melty.
