Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large Granny Smith apples (firm and tart work best)
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Caramel sauce or marshmallow fluff (for dipping)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Start by peeling your apples. Once peeled, core them and slice them into sticks roughly the size of a standard french fry, about 1/4 inch thick. In a medium bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon until fully combined and set this aside. Place your apple sticks into a large zip-top bag or a bowl and toss them thoroughly with the cornstarch. Ensure every piece is evenly coated, as this creates the crispy exterior. Shake off any excess powder before moving to the cooking stage.
- Heat about two inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. You want the oil to reach approximately 350°F. Carefully drop the coated apple sticks into the hot oil in small batches to avoid crowding the pan. Fry the apples for 2 to 3 minutes, turning them occasionally, until they turn a beautiful golden brown and feel crispy to the touch. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fries and place them briefly on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
- While the apple fries are still hot, toss them immediately into the bowl with your cinnamon-sugar mixture. Roll them around until the sugar sticks to the warm surface. Transfer the fries to a serving platter. Serve them immediately while they are hot and crispy. Pair them with a side of warm caramel sauce, chocolate ganache, or a light whipped cream for the ultimate dipping experience.
