Ingredients
Scale
- 4–6 thick slices of bread (Texas Toast, Brioche, or Challah preferred)
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
- Non-stick cooking spray or melted butter for the basket
Instructions
- Start by slicing your thick bread into three or four uniform strips. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, sugar, and a pinch of salt until the mixture is smooth and the cinnamon is well-incorporated. Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (185°C) for about 3 to 5 minutes to ensure an even cook from the moment the bread hits the basket.
- Lightly grease the air fryer basket with non-stick spray or a small amount of melted butter. Dip each bread stick into the egg custard, turning to coat all sides quickly. Be careful not to let the bread soak for more than a few seconds, or it will become too soft to handle. Allow any excess custard to drip off before placing the sticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Leave space between each stick so the air can circulate freely.
- Slide the basket into the air fryer and cook for 5 minutes. Open the basket and use tongs to carefully flip each French toast stick to ensure even browning. Cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes. You are looking for a deep golden-brown color and a firm, crispy exterior. Every air fryer model varies slightly in power, so check them a minute early to prevent burning.
- Remove the sticks from the air fryer and let them rest on a wire rack for one minute. This brief rest allows the exterior to crisp up further as the steam escapes. Arrange them on a serving plate and serve immediately while they are hot. Provide a small bowl of high-quality maple syrup for dipping, or add a handful of fresh berries on the side for a fresh touch.
