Air Fryer Churros with Chocolate Sauce

Air Fryer Churros with Chocolate Sauce

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (for dough)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • Cooking spray (neutral oil like avocado or canola)
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once the butter has melted and the liquid is boiling, reduce the heat to low and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously with a wooden spoon or spatula until a thick dough ball forms and pulls away from the sides of the pan. Remove the pan from the heat and let the dough cool for about 5 minutes. Once cooled slightly, beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the dough is smooth and glossy. Transfer the dough into a piping bag fitted with a large star tip.
  2. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Line the air fryer basket with a piece of perforated parchment paper or lightly grease the basket with cooking spray. Pipe the dough into 3-to-4-inch strips directly into the basket, cutting the end of the dough with scissors. Leave space between each churro so they do not touch. Lightly spray the tops of the churros with cooking spray. Air fry for 10 to 12 minutes, or until they are deeply golden brown and firm to the touch. You may need to work in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  3. While the churros are cooking, mix the 1/2 cup of sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and heavy cream. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until the sauce is smooth and melted. As soon as the churros come out of the air fryer, immediately toss them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture while they are still hot so the coating sticks. Serve the warm churros immediately with the chocolate dipping sauce on the side.
