Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- Zest of 1 lemon
- 1 egg
- 1 cup strawberry compote or jam
- Cinnamon (optional)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1–2 tbsp heavy cream or milk (if needed)
Instructions
- Gently warm the milk in a small saucepan until it’s just bubbling, then remove from heat. Stir in the melted butter until fully combined, and let it cool until it’s comfortably lukewarm to the touch.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and lemon zest. Whisk these dry ingredients together.
- Add the egg and the lukewarm milk-butter mixture. Stir well with a wooden spoon. Gradually mix in the remaining 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring thoroughly until a shaggy dough forms.
- Lightly flour a clean surface. Turn the dough out and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and soft.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest on the counter for 10 minutes.
- Roll the dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×9 inches.
- Evenly spread the strawberry compote over the dough, making sure to go to the edges.
- Slice the dough into 12 equal strips. Roll up each strip and place them snugly in a baking pan.
- Cover the pan and let the rolls rise in a warm spot until they’ve doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Bake the rolls for 23-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Prepare the frosting by whipping together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and strawberry compote, mixing until creamy.
- Once the rolls are baked, let them cool for 10 minutes. Slather with frosting and top with fresh strawberry slices if desired.
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
