Description

Delightful sweet rolls filled with strawberry flavor and topped with cream cheese frosting, perfect for special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup strawberry compote or jam
  • Cinnamon (optional)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 12 tbsp heavy cream or milk (if needed)

Instructions

  1. Gently warm the milk in a small saucepan until it’s just bubbling, then remove from heat. Stir in the melted butter until fully combined, and let it cool until it’s comfortably lukewarm to the touch.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 1/4 cups of flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and lemon zest. Whisk these dry ingredients together.
  3. Add the egg and the lukewarm milk-butter mixture. Stir well with a wooden spoon. Gradually mix in the remaining 1 cup of flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring thoroughly until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Lightly flour a clean surface. Turn the dough out and knead it for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and soft.
  5. Cover the dough with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rest on the counter for 10 minutes.
  6. Roll the dough into a rectangle, approximately 12×9 inches.
  7. Evenly spread the strawberry compote over the dough, making sure to go to the edges.
  8. Slice the dough into 12 equal strips. Roll up each strip and place them snugly in a baking pan.
  9. Cover the pan and let the rolls rise in a warm spot until they’ve doubled in size, about 45 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake the rolls for 23-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Prepare the frosting by whipping together cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and strawberry compote, mixing until creamy.
  13. Once the rolls are baked, let them cool for 10 minutes. Slather with frosting and top with fresh strawberry slices if desired.
  14. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Store leftover rolls in an airtight container for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week. Freeze for up to 2 months.
