- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
- 1/3 cup milk
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the water and cocoa powder, stirring until well combined. Remove from heat and whisk in the granulated sugar, flour, baking soda, salt, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth. Fold in chopped pecans if desired.
- Pour the batter into the skillet and bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick.
- For the frosting, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in cocoa powder and milk, then bring to a boil. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the warm frosting over the cake once it comes out of the oven.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for a week.
