- 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ cup honey or maple syrup
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- ½ cup orange juice
- 2 tbsp orange zest
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup dark chocolate chips (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan.
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
- In another bowl, whisk together the honey (or maple syrup), applesauce, orange juice, orange zest, and eggs.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if desired.
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Can be frozen for up to three months.
