A delightful dessert combining rich chocolate and bright orange zest, this Healthy Chocolate Orange Cake is both indulgent and nutritious.


Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¾ cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the honey (or maple syrup), applesauce, orange juice, orange zest, and eggs.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if desired.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Can be frozen for up to three months.
