- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1 cup powdered sugar, for glazing
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into squares.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the squares in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the beignets from the oil and drain them on paper towels.
- While still warm, toss the beignets in powdered sugar or drizzle them with a sweet glaze.
- Serve the beignet squares warm for the best experience.
