Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, for glazing

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thickness and cut into squares.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or a large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the squares in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove the beignets from the oil and drain them on paper towels.
  8. While still warm, toss the beignets in powdered sugar or drizzle them with a sweet glaze.
  9. Serve the beignet squares warm for the best experience.
