Description
Soft, warm, and delightfully chewy homemade soft pretzels that are easy to make and irresistibly delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined, then knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long snake and shape it into a pretzel.
- In a large pot, boil water and add baking soda. Dip each pretzel in the boiling mixture for about 30 seconds.
- Place the pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush each one with an egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the pretzels cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
