Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)
  • Butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  2. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  3. Stir in the flour and salt until a dough forms. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Allow the dough to rise in a warm place for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
  5. Mix the baking soda with 4 cups of water in a pot and bring to a gentle boil.
  6. Divide the risen dough into equal pieces and shape each into a pretzel.
  7. Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for 30 seconds; remove with a slotted spoon.
  8. Place pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter and enjoy!
