Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk, warm
- 1/4 cup grated cheese (optional, for topping)
- 1/4 cup butter, melted (for brushing)
- 1/2 cup grated cheese (for topping)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, and softened butter. Stir until you have a shaggy dough.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle. Spread softened butter over the surface and sprinkle with sugar and cheese if using.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log, then cut into 12 equal pieces.
- Place the pieces in greased muffin tins or a baking dish, cover again, and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Brush with melted butter and top with grated cheese. Serve warm.
