Description

A delightful twist on apple pie and bread pudding, this dessert features soft bread, sweet apples, and warm spices, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 16 oz French baguette
  • 1 3/4 lb gala apples (4-6)
  • 4 Tbsp butter
  • 2 1/2 Tbsp all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp apple pie spice
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 5 large eggs
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 2 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Optional: ice cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Cut the French baguette into 1-inch cubes and spread them on a baking sheet. Allow it to sit out overnight to dry, or alternatively, bake in a 300°F (150°C) oven for about 15 minutes until slightly crisp.
  2. Peel, core, and chop the gala apples into small pieces. In a sauté pan, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped apples, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons apple pie spice, and 1 cup of water. Cook for about 10 minutes, just until the apples start to soften. Remove from heat and let it cool.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the 5 large eggs, melted unsalted butter, whole milk, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon apple pie spice, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Add the stale bread cubes to the egg mixture and stir gently until the bread is fully coated. Then, fold in the apple mixture.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the bread pudding mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish or similar size. Spread it out evenly and press down gently to pack it together. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Notes

Serve warm with caramel sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
