Description
A comforting casserole featuring tender hamburger patties, flavorful gravy, potatoes, and carrots, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 lbs Ground Beef (80/20 lean)
- 1/2 cup Plain Breadcrumbs
- 1 Large Egg
- 1/4 cup Milk
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 tsp Dried Thyme
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
- 2 tbsp Olive Oil (for searing)
- 2 tbsp Unsalted Butter
- 1 Large Yellow Onion (thinly sliced)
- 8 oz Cremini Mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 cloves Garlic (minced)
- 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour
- 3 cups Beef Broth (low sodium)
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon Mustard
- 3 large Potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold, peeled and sliced 1/4-inch thick)
- 2 large Carrots (peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch rounds)
- 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (chopped, for garnish – optional)
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion powder, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.
- Shape the mixture into individual patties, about 6 to 8 in total. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat and sear the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove and set aside.
- Melt the butter in the same skillet, add the sliced onion, and cook until translucent. Stir in the mushrooms and garlic, sauté until mushrooms soften. Sprinkle in the flour and stir well.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard, cooking until the gravy thickens.
- Layer the sliced potatoes and carrots in a baking dish. Place the seared hamburger steaks on top and pour the gravy mixture over. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until vegetables are tender.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider adding fresh herbs. Ground turkey can replace beef for a lighter option.
